My life long friend and colleague retired after 32 years of service with the Fire Department. Instead of a gold watch, we all pitched in and bought him a Kimber Custom 1911 45 cal handgun. He is a gun collector and has always like the quality of the Kimber.
I was tasked with creating a display box worthy of such a weapon and commemorating a successful career. No Pressure!
I used all mahogany throughout. The gun rests inside a cut-out on top of a soft leather insert. The bullets (32 for 32 years of service) are also inset and resting on a leather pad. The 3 /16 glass is etched and inserted in the frame top of the frame.
The badge on the front is inlayed and the red acryllic splines match the red in the badge.
It is topped off by 20 battery powered LED lights on the inside of the case activated by a push switch underneath. The battery and wiring are all contained in a false bottom.
The feet are replicas of shell casings (obviously larger than life). It is all finished in spray lacquer.
The best part is I used every single tool I owned to make this box!
Table saw, router and router table, planer, band saw, scroll saw, lathe, clamps, sander, bench sander, drill press and more!
All in all I am very happy with the outcome of the display case and more importantly my friend loves it.. At least he says he does…I would not expect him to say otherwise even if it looked bad…
