Project Information

This was a fun 1 day build following thewoodwhisperer.com charity build and was blogged here.

I made this with the help of my 4 yo daughter which only made this more fun than it would have otherwise. I let her cut out the paper templates, cut the handles, paint it and put it all together as well as test drive it and decorate it (as can be seen in the pictures) while I did the wood cuts and shaping.

Main tools used were a jigsaw and a router to duplicate parts and to chamfer all the edges.

Materials:
Pre-laminated pine panel (3/4"x24"x72")
3/4" diameter oak dowel for the handles

Finish:
2 coats of dewaxed shellac

Fun build, fun ride, works real well.

I actually should be scolded but I did not watch his podcasts RE this build nor did I read the instructions that came with the plan, I just used the template to cut out the parts and figured it out as I went along with it…. oh boy…

As for the paint - I let my daughter paint this with her water colors, it went pretty well into the wood and I dont mind it being pale or lightening up over time. the shellac is supposed to seal it and worst case can always sand it down and redo the paint job if necessary. We went pretty low tech and high on the fun factor.

Great work. The horse looks fantastic.
No offense but since this is a child's play horse i think the paint job may be the best part, honestly.

While my the projects are in the build stage they become canvases for my 2 girls. If the piece is going to stay in in my garage i don't even bother refinishing it.
My Bench drawers look like they've been decorated by neolithic cave kids.

If art is any indication of a child disposition, well you have one happy little one on your hands.

PurpLev, nice job and how cool is that spending time with your little girl. I watched this podcast last week and thought man who do I know with a little kid so I could make this. Hope all is well and seems your weekend is going well.

I just need to do one I'm sure I think of someone that has a little one to ride it.

Well that's pretty good, Sharon. Now when you are able to make one by yourself, come back and talk to us.

Here's a small sample of what I'm referring to when i say 'decorated by Neolithic cave kids'
The drawers are lacking in style and craftsmanship. but they function well.
