Project Information

A birthday present for my nephew John on his 5th birthday. The box has separate compartments for the things he likes to collect: Rocks, bark, acorns, seaglass and seedpods are some of his favorites at the moment. The lettering inside the box is burned into the wood. The box is made of birch plywood. I used a piano hinge to connect the lid and finished with boiled linseed oil.

That's a sweet gift. I'm old, but not so old that I don't remember collecting some "favourite" rocks and putting them in the truck cab when I was supposed to be picking rocks and clearing them from the field. Bless my parents, they never discouraged me, but I can't say they ever encouraged me either.

I think it's a very sweet gesture to encourage his curiosity and wonder in this way.
