Project Information

This was one of the earlier jewelry boxes I made. The sides are maple and the top is highly figured mahogany with purple heart accents. Inside is a sliding/lift-out tray. The mahogany was hell to work with. Even my best hand scraper could not shave the hairy surface smooth. My only option was to sand forever and varnish heavily. But when you walk past it the figure appears to move like dancing flames. I have ten more feet of that mahogany because it was the same price as the regular straight-grained stuff so I bought the whole board. The miter keys are also purple heart.

The execution of the splines in the lid is amazing. I'm tuned into the miter keys right now since I just finished my first project where I used them. Nice completion with the figured mahogany. I love it.

Great box. What material did you use in the trays?

That top is gorgeous - of course the rest of the box is pretty nice too. I like the mirror and sliding divider.

The long time to sand really paid off on this one. It turned out great Blake.

OK - OK, I can't blame my wonky knee forever so I just dropped by to tell my mate Blake that, like his wife, I just love this box - but I guess no one is surprised, because I just love small wooden boxes!

This is really nice, as is project 3143.

Question … did you do anything special to "pop" the figure before applying a top coat?

Beautiful work Blake, you've just motivated me to go out and try again. My last 3 boxes have been failures. Thankyou.
