Project Information

This is by far the most complex item I've attempted. It is made of tiger maple and cherry, and is from the December Wood Magazine. Although I finally got it right, my learning process was thrown a curve by the design dimensions for the drawers being incorrect in the magazine.

In the PLAN, the drawer depth dimensions written were 1/8" longer than the case depth. They apparently did not take the 1/4 inch rabbet for the case back into consideration when they did their dimensioning.
So, I was faced with either rebuilding the drawers, or finding a way to cut them down. Happily, I have a 24 inch Flatmaster drum sander from Stockroom Supply. that I was able to use to carefully remove 3/32" on each face of the drawer, using a fence to maintain square, and it worked out. I then glued the finish drawer faces to the boxes, and voila! You cannot tell that there was ever a problem. It looks great, and AGAIN I've learned what not to do…...

My cabinet maker friend and woodworking mentor from Bisbee, AZ has given me a phrase that has helped me through many of these "learning" experiences. " A really good and succesful woodworker knows how the hide his / her mistakes."

Nice recovery on the crisis situation. Seems like I have one of those on every one of my projects. I guess it's those little accomplishments that make a project more meaningful sometimes. Nice job on a great looking box.

Thanks to all for your comments! The save was inspired by my wife, and the curves the result of my new Rikon 10-325 band saw and my Ridgid Oscillating belt/spindle sander.

Griff, Thanks. I was in my local ACE store, and they had this 10" wide piece of cherry, that had the grain pattern calling to me. So I cut all three faces from the same board, to get the best grain result possible.

BC,

Much as I'd like to, I can't claim the design. It came from Wood Magazine's December issue
