Project Information

I made this 6" by 8" x 4" Jewelry Box from 1/2" Quarter Sawn Red Oak. The corners are finger joints that were made using my Leigh D4R with 3/8" fingers. The wood hinge was also made using the D4R and the Hinge Crafter to drill the holes. I had to find a longer drill bit to make the holes. I found a 1/8" brad point drill bit 12" long that worked much better than the standard drill bit.

The top tray inside is removable and lined with black leather and the bottom is also line with leather.

The latch is a two pairs of 1/8" diameter rare earth magnets. The front was designed to make it easy for your fingers to open the box.

The finish is one coat of shellac, 5 coats of wipe on poly and a final coat of a finishing wax. I sanded with 320 after the shellac and gently rubbed with 0000 steel wool between coats of wipe on poly.

A lot of great features here and you've done beautiful job on this cool box. I like the way the front is broken up by the fingerhold lift. The wooden hinge really rounds out the sweet design.

I love the "ancient" look it has, reminds me of Egyptian tomb artifacts for some reason with that design element on the front. Beautiful!
