Project Information

Alder Box with spalded burl maple top edged in Sapele, Lift handle is Gabon ebony with engrave Mammoth Ivory featuring a master EOD badge. The interior tray is Sapele lined in felt and has a compartmentalized removable shelf.

This was my first adventure in spalded wood that needed to be filled. I used 10 tubes of epoxy melted in acetone. It came out great, but I will know better than to use a thickness sander on this again; I ruined the belt with the epoxy. The ebony/ivory lift was an afterthought, I was making several for another project and decided to make a small one from the cutoff. The engraving was done by laser, as I have no talent in that area, then inked after.

Some blue fill was added to the spalding just as an experiment. I cant decide if the top is more of a face in profile or an Island in bad weather, Either way I like it

Really sharp looking project. Good information to know about the epoxy and the sanding belt. Who would a thunk it?

Thank you for the compliments. I hope it goes to a good home, and raises some money at auction.
