Project Information

I made those boxes from oak wood, 10mm thick boards - all 6 sides were cut on 45 miter so there are no visible joints anywhere. Dimensions 39×8x8cm. There is additional, removable inner compartment.
Splines, handles and hinges were made of walnut. First time I made wooden hinges. I cut fingers on bandsaw, holes on drillpress, sanded on disc and belt sander.
Hinge axe - 3mm brass rod (3.5mm hole, few drops of glue).
Hinges dimensions 63×40x10mm.
Finish - linseed wood oil.

Great job Ivan! Kind of an unusual shape for a jewelry box but your execution is wonderful and the wooden hinges are outstanding! Is there any sort of latch to keep it closed?

I really like your boxes. The combination of wood, splines, rounded edge, and finish give the box an old, organic feel which I really appreciate.

I also noticed the grain on the hinges runs perpendicular to the box grain. While it draws your eye to the hinges, I would expect the grain direction will also keep them from splitting if the grain ran parallel to the hinges.

Nice work.

These boxes are beautiful and well designed Ivan. Great work on the hinges too. I also like the lip you put around the inside of the lid. A little different and special.

Oak is not the easiest wood to work with, but these uniquely beautiful jewelry boxes prove you've mastered it well Ivan! Love the hinges … and am so glad you didn't cut your own fingers on the bandsaw … lol!!

Real nice , I could use it for my small woodworking tools. That would make a real nice safe place for the special tools that I am always miss placing because they are so small.
