Project Information

This is a Jefferson Bookstand I made for a friend. It is a 5 sided bookstand - apparently Jefferson would use it to study multiple texts at a time. Sort of like having a bunch of browser windows open on a computer, except with books
This one is made of walnut and has breadboard ends for each of the book shelves. There are 5 of those total and each had grooves cut on the back to hold up the shelf. They all have hidden drawbore pins to hold the breadboard ends and these are on the back - except on the top one that I messed up and accidentally cut on the front!
This is built on a lazy Susan base and spins freely. There are small rare earth magnets in the base to hold the side shelves closed when not in use
Finish is Danish oil followed by vans beeswax finish

Not only is it something you don't see every day, but it is something I had never seen before. Very cool project and a great decoration for a bookworm. My daughter would love that. She is a voracious reader.

First off, I like it. Did you see it in a museum or find it in a book? It would be interesting to see the original ones hinges.

Thanks all! I'm not sure what the original hinges look like - I saw a reproduction of the original and designed it from there. I really enjoyed this project though!

Logan, what a fine idea and well done project. It is beautiful. Nice job on the breadboards. If your friend uses real books for research (a lost art), I am sure he will put this to good use.

I remember seeing this at Monticello in Jefferson's bedroom. I thought at the time it was a super way to organize research using several books, being able to keep them open to the page you want, while not taking up too much space. Jefferson probably saw something like it in France and improved or extended the design. He certainly had an eye for design and incorporated great ideas into his home, his study, and his research.

Thanks for sharing this with us. It was fun to see it again.

Nice job Logan !! Great reproduction beautifully done. Love the color of the walnut.

I have pictures of Jefferson's original somewhere and always wanted to make one. My wife reads a lot and she would use it.
