Japanese tool tray
for the toolbox.

My sketch for the japanese inspired tool tray.

This post comes from my Japanese tool tote blog.

To complete the setup for working with Japanese tools I wanted a little tool tray that I could use to hold and carry tools while working, especially to keep the chisels off the ground.

I decided it should be made so it could be stored and transported in the toolbox when not in use, that it should be made with the same joinery as the drawer and again no hardware.
For the beauty and the joy of the eye I wanted a handle made of a branch like I have on my tool tote , so first step was a walk in the forest.

Pictures:
1. Tool tray full of tools and ready for working wood.
2. Finger joints.
3. Japanese saw.
4. Making grooves with a Record 43.
5. Handle details.
6. Tray in the toolbox.

I hope this could be to some inspiration, perhaps some Japanese tool boxes.

Best thoughts,

MaFe

Hi guys, thank you for the comments, I love the idea of wheels, 'even it have to be Japanese wheels'... laugh. The weight of the tray is 300g / 0,66 pounds so do not worry.
Best thoughts on a wonderful Sunday here,

Another nice project. I have some Japanese hand tools and I will try Japanese techniques as soon as I've learned the Western ones. That could take quite a while….........

Using a branch for a handle really adds a great organic touch.

Take care.

Now be honest Mads. You drew it after you made it didn't you?) Either way, it's a great sketch.

Rabbits?....grooves maybe?

Do you drift out all pins to store it? How about the uprights?

Never mind, found my specs and had nother look at pics….....
I was amazed how much better it cuts.

I had a hard tooth J-saw, I loved it! Later got nother one with hand filed teeth from "Tools From Japan"

Hello Lj's,
Whitewulf, yes these Japanese saws are extremely effective and the kerf so fine, a real treasure.
(Only thing is to resharpen these superfine teeth with changing hights… Mine are with hardened teeth so I buy new blades when tired).
CJIII, smiles.
Andy, yes you are right this tme, I made the drawing after, acually when I wrote the blog to make it easier to understand. When I started the tray I only had the branch and the outside measures, the rest came as I went. (Is that cheating?).
Soda, you got it, my wonderful French friend.
308gap, look at Sodabowskis answer or here http://lumberjocks.com/projects/32316 .
Doug, some soul, zen perhaps…
Nate, thanks.
Stefang, try to open your mouth and breathe - now you can breathe Japanese! No need to do more.
Dr. Ken, no I am not good at that… Big smile.
Joe, thank you.
Lew, I also feel the pins give something to the tray besides strength.
Madts, 'cool as Hell' - I would had guessed it was hot in Hell… laugh. Thank you.
Jamie, I get it, and think also it gives the calmness like it.
Serge, no never, a creative mind need challanges, it's a kind of gym I guess, and I love it.
David, DAVID! Laugh.
Arround 900 views in one day… I thought this Japanese trip would be for the few, so I am happy to see the intrest - thank you.
Best of my thoughts to all of you and thank you for the comments, also you David,
Mads
