MaFe, when are you going to stop surprising us? That is just so like you, and me. See a piece of wood on the side of the road, and instantly think, " that would make a good…....." Well I came across a build I made early in the not-so-good-woodworking days of past, a dado jig from oak pallet wood. Now every time I see that jig I will think of you sitting there in Paris, wishing you had some wood.

I like this a lot. The Japanese have a marvelously subtle way of touching the essence of made objects. Often simple, but with a great deal of thought, whether it's architecture, furniture, swords, ...or a chisel box. Thanks for bringing me back to this line of thought. Off to my library to dig out the Japanese books.

I also love Paris, but annoy my wife by stopping every twenty feet to admire the old store front construction and the infinite variety of doors. Oh, the things we find interesting.

Nice project, Mads. Did you get a hold of any of the wooden wine boxes while in Paris. I was given a few wooden wine boxes when my daughter worked at the party store and have nut used the thin wood for anything yet. You have inspired me to get going on it!

Very nice chisel box and photos MaFe! This coming weekend there is a one day Japanese Toolbox making seminar at the Lee Valley Tools store here in Ottawa. It sold out before I could register! Hope to build one out of pine with the side mortise/tendons and rose bud nails on the included web site!

Jim, no wine boxes from Paris, pallets, and fruit boxes - happy if I can inspire, yes wine box wood are perfect for this also.

Roger, yes the japanese have a way to find the essence, to remove all we don't need, to get to the core, and then leave us there in a coma. Paris have so many beautiful spots, and yes facades also, my fionce are also often tired of me taking pictures or just in a coma…

Mafe great job, I was laughing when I looked at your laptop and saw Lumberjocks on it. My wife always kids me about that site. I watched some videos on Japanees woodworkes who only used handtools it was amazing! Great post Hope all is well.

You did a great job mafe. I always laugh when I see people making them like the guys at the Daiku Dojo site or the other box that was posted a few days ago, with raised tenons and beautiful plugs.

Most of you guys idealize Japanese and their craftsmanship but let me tell you: Most of them here are hackers that don't care at all for quality. They assemble the stuff together with very few regard for joinery or aesthetics in the hidden spots.

mafe, your box is how they are actually done here: mismatched boards and a few nails thrown together. And, by the way, they are not only tool boxes but boxes in general. Also used to transport food for delivery in bikes and other things.
