Project Information

This is all about joinery. Found the plans online and had some real fun with this project. I use these horses every single day. White ash beam from my yard tree, cherry legs, hickory stretcher, cocobolo wedges, Douglas fir feet. Wedged mortise is way tighter than I thought it would be. One of the most useful tools in the shop. Oh, yes, finished with walnut oil. You can see how beautiful the wood is before & after oil. I use it as a sit down bench among other uses.

Nice work, they came out great!
I have made some similar in all Dfir. I added more stretchers and upped the stock size to add more mass to them for weight. They are useful fixtures for me as well.

These look great. They've been on my to-make list for a long time. How tall are they?

They are 26.5" tall. The plans can be on the internet in a couple places. I followed the plan by Jay Van Arsdale, I think from Fine Woodworking. Thanks to all for the comments.

Hey Waterlog. I took a course on Japanese joinery at Jay's house in CA a year ago. He is a really great guy and very into the all Japanese work. You did a fine job and certainly something you can be proud of.

I was just looking for a new sawhorse design. I made the scrap 2×3's thrown together model just to get by. I have a feeling my weekend just got a little busier after seeing these. May have to go a little taller though. Being 6'5" tends to make your workbenches and other items taller.
