Project Information

I got into spindle turning about 10 years ago and then bowl turning a couple of years later. While trying my hand at hollowing, I encountered typical beginner difficulties and relegated several pieces of wood to the "kindling bin." Two of these pieces were chunks of Bay.

I recently learned that Bay trees are being attacked by disease and are rapidly becoming hard to find in the US and turning blanks are very rare, indeed.

While helping my friend clean his garage, I came across the kindling bin and discovered that the chunks of Bay I thought had been destroyed were still around … and of turnable size! Happy find!

Now that I have all the proper tools and a wee bit of experience under my belt, I was able to reclaim some of this rare wood and make several pretty little items. I am a happy turner, indeed.

It certainly looks like you have your tool technique down now. You can't get that kind of finish and detail with sandpaper. Congratulations on your wood find; that is, indeed, some pretty grain. Sorry to see yet another tree under attack. :(

Excellent! A great use for those pieces. It must be truly rewarding to have rescued such magnificent material into such a beautiful form. I love the grain and the color of that wood…it is truly a shame that it is becoming rare.

Aaaarrrgh! Just what we need… another woman putting the guys to shame. :D Very nice work, and a VERY nice finish. Welcome a board. :) So what finish did you use on these? If I didn't know any better, I would have guessed Bubinga, and I'd have been wrong. Its good to open my education to new woods.
