Project Information

It Takes Two to Mango A local woodworking buddy gave me a small chunk of Mango and an odd shaped piece of Opiuma (Yup, it's a new one on me, too). After re-sawing and glueing, I was able to stretch the two into a pair of boxes. The larger tapered box with the lift off lid is approx. 6×6, the smaller one with the hidden pin-hinged lid is 5×5 inches. The lift off lid is 4 panels with a thin divider of oak. The mango has wonderful cross grain highlights and some spalting. Both boxes are finished with satin poly and lined with black suede. When I finished, I had one little 2×2 scrap of mango left over.

Two more nice ones, John. Great use of the wood, tasteful shapes, and your never ending supply of unique lift designs. Nice indeed.

John,
Wow. Both are really beautiful. Mango are so difficult to plane manually because of the grain orientation but now you had proven something. I like more the tapered one. Nice knobs.

WOW John
A pair of attractive boxes !
That is some exceptional wood and the pairing of the two woods is a beautiful combination.
The lid lift on the larger one is a stylized dancing pair I take it and I would be dancing too after creating these beauties .
Now about that left over scrap ,another box perhaps ?

Very nice boxes. I have a small collection of Mango cut and dried. Waiting to make some small boxes. Mine looks very similar to yours, with spalting and streaks of yellow. It is tough to plane, so I end up just doing a ton of sanding once I've planed it as smooth as I can. Nice combination of woods you used, and good craftsmanship.

John, those are two spectacular boxes. I especially like the slanted box with the lift off lid. Great finish on them.

John, nice save on the Mango. I too like the slanted sides. The lift is especially interesting. A friend sent me a piece of mango last week, and I made a box that I'll post soon. Mango has some interesting grain, and is a difficult wood to pair with another wood.

Kudos as well on making this an interesting posting. I like the photographs, background, story, and title. Well done. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Neat use of the Mango John. I would have thought you probably had brought this home with you from Hawaii. I have several pieces, none that are spalted though which really gives it a nice effect. I always enjoy seeing what designs you have used for lifts, nothing ordinary and mundane about your boxes.
