Project Information

I was looking for ideas on the internet and found a picture of this one a couple of months ago and finally decided to make it. The weird thing is the responses I have gotten so far. I made it because my wife always said that when I made an animal she really liked the expression that go into the eyes. I was going for a dog that was begging for something, but the few people I've shown it to saw something different. My daughter instantly disliked it because she said it made her sad because it looked like an abused animal (she liked the craftsmanship and the work that went into it). My Mom and Dad said it made them think of a dog that had done something bad and was in trouble. Let me know what yall think.

It is about 1 ½ feet across and 1 foot tall. It is hard to tell from the pictures but I really tried to put some depth in it. It has spacers behind most of the pieces from ¾ inches down to 1/8 inches and ended up being about two inches thick. The wood that made it was cocobolo, babinga, bacote, aspen, ebony, wenge, walnut, butternut, mahogany, yellow heart, ambrosia maple, and koa. No stains were used to achieve the colors and has a satin finish.

The eyes really do capture your attention, well done! It looks like a sad dog to me. If your look at it as two animals I also saw at times what looked like to profile of the heads of two weird bird like creatures.

I have Labradors. Get the sad puppy face a lot. Usually followed by really happy face. Really really nice job.

Awesome work!! My son is a dog person and he sees sad eyes. Actually sad and begging are not that far apart.

They seem sad to me too. But also a little "You're kidding, you really want me to get off the couch again?
Nice work.

Spectacular work as usual Kory. To me the eyes look a little leery or veiled, but it's hard to tell without accompanying body language.

Kory, stefang hit on something. Without being able to see if his mouth is open, panting, tongue hanging out, etc, it's hard to get a clear picture of the mood. Also, you know what a bloodhound looks and other dogs with baggy skin around the face, they have that sad puppy look to them. This has pieces about the eyes that are bulging, rounded and they can give a baggy look to the area. This may contribute to the sad look.

Great job as ususal.

Love the composition! I see almost 'tiger' eyes…. not the animal really, just that 'look' that tigers always seem to have in their eyes…..

Personally, my first thought was a romantic coupe staring into each others eyes. I didn't see anything hang-dog about it.
