Project Information

This was a fun one to build. This is a Murphy Bed that I built in November 2017 with a Locker theme. I built this one in It is from my Locker Murphy Bed Series. I took a full-size bed and one bookcase to make it look like a series of lockers. The face of the Murphy bed is divided it into three panels. The panels are separated with a piece of trim to extenuate the doors. That trim is a 1" stip and I put a 1/8" rabbet on each edge to give the appearance of a perfect 1/8" door gap. This also helps the bookcase blend into the unit, since the bookcase will have that same edge. More on the Red Sox Bed.

On each locker face, cut out vinyl for the vent graphics and numbers on the top. The nameplates are 14" x 7" pieces with a chamfered edge. I have the customer got to choose the names and I cut them out of vinyl as well. The logos on the lockers can be purchased from a lot of different sources (eBay, Flathead, etc.). Sometimes the customer will order and apply them on their own or we can handle that. When designing a face like them, you can usually arrange the door division anyway you like, just keep in mind the overall face size.

Looking at it closed, you really don't know which one is the bookcase and what doors make up the bed unless you actually try and see which opens. In this case, I put the bookcase on the left. Inside there are all adjustable shelves. We also have options for pull out drawers in the lower section. Keep in mind if you do add drawers, you'll need to space the drawer away from the hinge side on most hinges. I have found using institutional hinges eliminate your need for spacing.

Mechanism Used: Murphy Spring

Wood Type: Maple

Finish: White and Red Lacquer
