Project Information
This is a project Ive been excited to take on for a while.
The main mission has been to find some Ironwood! Finally!
I have enough to make about 5 more spoons.
Carving green, it was actually ok to work with. I wouldn't say it was a whole lot more difficult to carve than green hard maple.
It sanded so nice as well. Im really happy with it. Although it looks alot like birch, its still got some unique grain.
While I'm at the farmers market selling my spoons, people gravitate towards unique looking spoons. This one, I would have to put in a glass case or something to draw some attention to it.
I weight this spoon compared to another similar size spoon, and Ironwood weighed in at 79 grams and a similar style maple weighed about 49 grams.
Another process in spoon making is raising the grain by soaking in hot water.
This wood kept its smooth finish after hot water. Cool!
I would love to hear some experiences with ironwood!
Does a seasoned ironwood log change color ? Anyone know?
Thanks!
Check my shop here! I got some matching Kuksa's I just listed!
