Project Information

This is a continuation of a project I previously posted. The clients, while I was there installing the booth, asked if I would build a table to match. So I have completed the table and installed it yesterday. The table is solid oak with bread board ends. The finish is a Kona stain with one coat of amber shellac followed by 2 -3 coats of spray on clear shellac. My first table and having to make it fit the space and still be functional was a bit of a challenge. As always, learned a lot.

Looks nice and cozy! I needed one like this in our last house!
Did you make the seat lids so they can open for storage?

Beautiful work! I would use something like a polyurethane over the shellac to prevent water rings and alcohol damage. Nice detail on the feet.

woodshaver - yes both of the side seats are piano hinged and it has plenty of storage.

Wdwerker - Im glad you posted. I was unsure if you could do poly over shellac. I will try that in the future. Would be handy if you didnt want the glossy finish of shellac and wanted to go with more of a matte….plus sounds like its more durable. I have a desk (that I am sitting at right now) that I finished in Shellac and havent had any problems with it yet.

Thanks guys!

Nice setup. As for poly over shellac, my understanding is this. Shellac can go over anything, and anything than go over shellac.

I would love to have that in my house. I've tried to talk the wife into letting me build a booth but she won't have it.

"Wax Free" shellac is considered a a universal sealer. Just about any finish most of use would be using is compatible. A pint of Guinness sitting on the table would also be very compatible. This is really nice work! With or without a Guinness pictured.

…"A pint of Guinness sitting on the table would also be very compatible…."

10-4 on THAT suggestion! And NOT one of those 14.2oz fake pints sold in the USA.

This looks terrific! Agree, I think one of those would look great in my 100+ year old home!
