Project Information

I recently saw someone on youtube making tobacco pipes and it really inspired me to make my own. Honestly I have always wanted to try this, but could never figure out how to make such a long curved stem…until now.
To make the stem, I re-sawed two thin strips of Ipe on my bandsaw then ran a very shallow dato down the middle of entire length of the thin strips of ipe (this dato would act as one half of my air way). Then I glued the two strips together, datos facing each other, to make an air way that is exactly as wide as my table saw blade. Then clamped the stem into a curved form that I made to give it some shape. After it came out of the form about 24 hours later, I shaped it using my disc sander, files, rasp and sandpaper.
To make the bowl, it was simply turned on the lathe from a beautiful piece of Cherry that a friend gave me. I shaped the bowl, then drilled as small air hole down through the middle. I drilled a mortise into the side of the bowl to accept the tennon at the end of the pipe and used CA glue to bond the two pieces together.

Thanks for looking!

Very neat pipe. I was just going to ask how you got that hole in there and then I read about the dado!!

Thanks Jim…Id like to make some more of these hopefully the design improves a bit. The dado trick was my own thinking (meaning, I have not personally seen anyone else do that as of yet) Im sure someone has….
Your projects are great too…I love that lamp you made!
