Project Information

Finally, I finished my first real workbench. I followed a design/plan I found online from the Woodsmith Shop (which I've seen other folks on LJ use), but ended up changing and adding to the original design.

The top is comprised of four 3/4" sheets of MDF, cut to the appropriate dimensions. Only two of the sheets were included as a full piece, while the other two were just fillers around the outside of the bench top for added stability and weight. The table legs are pine and the edging and bottom shelf is Oak (I just wanted to use what I had on hand).

I made two dados for each T-Track so they sit flush with the table. Also, there's a Kreg Klamp Track, Kreg Vise, Klamp Plate, and a bunch of bench dog holes. I also have pegboard on either side of the table. I plan to eventually add another Klamp Track as well as an additional shelf and/or drawers.

I finished the edging and base with Shellac.

Took lots of effort but I'm happy with how it turned out!

Looks Good! I've thought about making a bench with the Kreg accessories, still up in the air, but with yours to look at i'm re-thinking it again. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Lance. I really liked the clamp table that Kreg sells but it's a little overpriced, in my opinion. I also wanted a solid workbench so I figured to sort of blend them together. I'd highly recommend adding t-track or clamp track!

Also, thanks to SteveW too.

Fantastic. That table looks almost exactly what I have drawn on paper. Just picked up the wood to start building today.

I like the peg boards on the end. I'm off to the shop to make them for my table saw :)

Nice bench!

Im wondering one thing, how did you attach those tracks? Do you have an other sheet under your top sheet that you pre attached the kreg tracks to? Or did you have long enough bolts to tighten it from under your table ?

Im about to do something similar, I was thinking of doing a torsion box with 1/2 mdf top and bottom.. install kreg tracks on it before assembling, then use a 3/4 inch mdf for the top so the tracks sits flush.

  • Sorry..I misread , my question was for a torsion box, at first I tought your bench was one.
