Project Information

It's been a while sense my last project post because this one took a while to finish making the pattern and making two pieces from it. I found a picture on the internet and really liked it, so I went to work on a pattern. When I had it made I started thinking, that I always make a piece and put it on our walls at the house. Then end up giving, donating, or selling the piece. I usually don't enjoy making a piece over and over because after I've made it once the challenge is over and I'm already thinking of the next one. So I think to myself that I will make two pieces at the same time and keep one for the house. But again (to my own downfall), I start thinking I will invert the wood choices to make it a little more fun and play with the colors. As it turns out, after getting both pieces done they look so good as a set I don't think I can split them up. I'm in the same boat as always sitting here with blank spaces on our walls, go figure? Please let me know if you agree to keep them together or split them up? Just to give you one more thing to think about is I have already changed the original pattern so I can make one facing the other way. That way the firebirds would facing each other???

Without getting too artsy, while making these pieces I kept thinking of the concept of humanity surrounded by the beauty of nature and heritage. Then you invert the colors, it could make a statement about all cultures being in the same situation when you really look at the big picture.

It has some similar characteristics to my last piece, but if anyone has any suggestions to the origin or culture that the original art came from I would love to hear it. All of your suggestions about different cultural art forms from my last piece have given me enough ideas for new projects to last me for quite some time. I'm always looking for more.

These pieces are made from aspen, lacewood, cocobolo, cherry, yellow heart, bloodwood, and purple heart (No stain or coloring). They are about 14×8 each. I'm having a lot problems finding more aspen, so if anyone has a good source please let me know.

Wow, This is a masterpiece! You have a very creative eye! I think I would keep them together but if the price is right that might influence me into another decision. Very well done.

Very unique.
I looked at your other intarsia projects…masterful work.
How large are these? It would help if you photographed them with a ruler in the pic.

Thanks for posting

First let me say that I think these are extraordinary pieces and I like them paired. I also agree with your feelings about not wanting to make the same thing twice. I am the same, but unfortunately lack your skill/talent. Facing each other is ok, but not a big deal in my view.

Not having ever tried anything like that. I'm going to ask the simple question.
How do you glue it up?

Thanks for all of your comments and they are about 14×8. I'm not sure how everyone else glues thier pieces together but this is how I go about it. After all pieces are sanded down and I'm happy with the fit I will tape the pattern to my work table for a guide and put all the pieces on the pattern. Then I use CA glue (kinda like super glue with a spray on accelerant to dry fast) to glue the pieces together. After they are all together I will make a 1/8 back board about 1/8 smaller than the actual piece. Then use regular wood glue to join your piece to the back board for strength with different sized spring clamps. On some of the larger pieces I will pad it and put just about anything I can find for weight to let it glue evenly. Hope this answers your questions and thanks again for all your kind comments.

I had to come back for a second look. Your talent borders on the absurd. I can't stop looking at it, having never attempted such a feat.
