Project Information

Completed towards end of '07. My final project for college(PA College of Technology).

Solid Red Oak, Aromatic Red Cedar lined, Brass Hardware, Mortise and Tenon/Raised Panel construction… all around, Solid Bracket Feet across the front and on the sides, Two Drawers hand dovetailed, Solid Top with Breadboard Ends/Through Tenons, Fluted Corner Appliqués and Moldings, Sanding Sealer/Cherry Stain/Wipe-On Poly….

We were required to think up, design/draw, dimension, and build anything we wanted limited only to the Bd. Ft. of lumber we used. I went over the allowable limit of lumber, probably twicefold… making it hard for me to complete the project in the time allowed. ...I did eventually complete it after graduation at home, and I think it turned out well(considering having designed and custom made everything from scratch in a hurry).

It's VERY HEAVY :)

I like the design of your hope chest very much- so much that i made it a favorite. i really like the drawers in the bottom. I have to build a hope chest for my granddaughter. I will probably use your design with a few minor changes.
By the way, i was born and raised on a farm outside of Portage, Pa. have lived in WVa. since 1962.
Great work! Keep it up.

Andrew,

I don't know about your final grade but you get an A in my book. This is a gorgeous piece. The drawers add a unique element to the piece. Your finish looks good and I really like the overall design of the piece.

Thanks for the post.

Very nice. I like the through tenons on the breadboard edge. I haven't seen that before. As they say the devil is in the details, there are a lot of details here. thanks for sharing. So you don't just grab the handles and go? I know what you mean about going overboard with the size. I built my niece one out of solid cherry a few years back; it is all you want to lift when it is empty… btw welcome to LJs. looking forward to seeing more of your work.
