Project Information

Bust of the clients Swiss mountain dog, Jasper, life size. 10"x12"x14" w/o base. Bust is black walnut finished with tung oil. Base is spalted maple, sealed with grain filler and finished with gloss lacquer. The purple heart ribbon, which signifies epilepsy awareness (the breed is prone to this illness), is displayed because the dog is so afflicted, is carved from soft maple, colored with leather dye, and finished with semi-gloss lacquer. 5 months start to finish, estimated actual time 3 months, as I have been working another project during this time.

Thanks guys, this project was a blast! Jeff, The walnut I got for this project was cut 40 years ago, and was abandoned in a drying barn of a defunct wood reclamation business ever since. My supplier bought the property and discovered several hundred board ft. of 4" thick planks in great shape. I don't know if it was because it had dried so long, or was just good quality wood, but carving it was actually easy and enjoyable…..

My point was Michael that it wasn't a project that could be done in 3 or 4 hours or 3 or 4 days. If it was done in maybe basswood, it would've taken much, much less time and it would've been much easier to do.

Understood Jeff, I did not think of that! I just assumed that's what you meant because a few other people on some other sites mentioned walnut being hard to work with and I did not see why because the physical act of carving it was fairly easy….
