Project Information

This is my entry in the woodworking contest.

Set of 3 tables made for my oldest daughter Nichole and her twin daughters Brianna and Alyssa.

Wenge and Curly Yellowheart.

Sanded the the top to 320 and applied 3 coats General Finishes Armor Seal
Legs and sides sanded to 120 and 2 coats of Armor seal.

Table design based on splay-legged table in recent Finewoodworking Magazine except splay angle is 95 degrees and the three table heights are 17 for the coffee table and 21 and 24 for the 2 end tables.

Edges of 1.125 inch thick table top formed with table-saw-cove jig, scrapped and sanded etc.

Tops made from a single curly yellowheart board, is 12 inches wide.

Coffee table is 36 inches long and the end tables are 18.

Mortice and tennon construction pegged with 1/8 brass rod

Added hidden compartments to the underside of tables.

Anigre, southern birch, honduran mahogany and Tennesse black walnut.

Sanded to 120

Seedlac shellac finish.

Sliding tops.

$4 Locking clasps from Rockler

Fun project to make.

Resawed 8/4 material to 1/2. Ran thru my Ryobi drum sander. Table saw grooves and rails. Glued and nailed. 1/4 birch plywood bottoms and screwed in underside of table top.

Great addition. I love how you used beautiful wood on something that will 99.9% of the time will be completely hidden from view. I've thought of making something like this but sized to accept one of those fireproof boxes.

Now, not only will she lose the contents - she will lose the whole table as the thief runs out the door with it tucked under his arm. LOL

I wonder how many thousands of $ have been placed in hidden compartments in furniture and then the heirs trash all of the old folks furniture and wonder how come they never left any money.

Way cool. I have a real weakness for the hidden compartment concept. Thanks, Dan.

Great idea Dan and great looking job to boot. Me being an old user, I was thinking what a great place to hide my stash when I was using. Lets hope she's a hellava lot smarter than I am. You keep her that way Dad. jockmike
