Project Information

This is a project I did in school. I don't like taking the easy road, and instead gravitate to the more challenging methods/projects. We were tasked with fabricating baseboard, window casing, and crown molding. We all learned how to use a table saw to cut a cove, and we were given plenty of freedom with regard to the profiles we chose. After making the various trim pieces we installed it all on a mock window/ceiling/floor, coping the inside corners.

I decided that, unlike my classmates, I'd make my crown molding (except for the cove), and the window casing using the technique Matthew Bickford outlined in his book Mouldings In Practice. The school has a very nice set of hollows and rounds made by Mr. Bickford. The rest of the class used machines to fabricate their trim…whereas I slaved (and sweated) away with the hand planes.

Using a profile gauge I copied the profile from a heritage building in my town. The original window casing was in very poor shape (as seen in the picture).

After copying the profile to my piece I proceeded to cut the layout lines down the length of the piece.

Thankfully, when it was all finished my mitered corners matched up beautifully. Any variation in the profile would have been obvious.

Thanks for looking!

Excellent work. I hope some day to have a half set of Mr. Bickfords H&R's. Looking forward to your next project.

Also meant to ask, what school? It's unusual to hear of schools having good quality hand tools and teaching students to use them.

Thank-you! Apparently there's quite a wait for his planes. They don't come cheap, but I thoroughly enjoyed using them.

The school is Algonquin College in Perth, Ontario…the heritage carpentry and joinery program. There aren't many programs like it around. The workshop at Algonquin is pretty impressive. Great professors too. I think there's another school with a similar program on the east coast of Canada as well. Perth also has the Rosewood school.

What a coincidence…you made the same jewelry box I did. Good job on yours!
