After my wife told me that my son was going to be a Knight for Halloween we looked at swords, shields and helmets for him. I could not believe the price nor the quality of what was offered. SO…..............................
My sons sword is the Knight sword with the black handle. Used Popular for durability and light weight. Since this was my first attempt at making a sword, I had a lot of planning to do. The only solution that I could think of at first was table saw with a 10 degree bevel. pretty easy for the first three cuts. Then realized did not have a flat surface. Think Think think. Thank goodness for double sided table and scrap pieces. the handle was an easy fix, just trimmed off the blade edges and bingo. The handle hilt was scrap piece that I added afterwards by tracing out the shape of the handle.
The second sword is a gladiator version for my nephew who just had to have one after seeing a picture of the one I made for my son. This time I was smarter and used my joiner with the table angled 10 degrees. A lot easier. The blade of the sword was made narrower then the tip then re sanded to give the proper blade angle. initial plan was to leave un painted but plans change. so I used white oak for the blade and handle with American walnut for the handle hilts. used poplar dowels for the accents.
