Project Information

This is a project I did for an article in Popular Woodworking (November 2007). When researching my book I came across this piece that was made in Peter Hall's shop as an "extra". (Hall brothers build most of the original G&G furniture)
I haven't been able to determine for certain which Greene and Greene house this piece may have been an extra from (or if it is by chance a Peter Hall design). I suspect it was and extra from the Blacker House though.

Somewhere in the 50's - this table (which was originally a Library table ) was cut down to make it a function as a coffee table - which it does to this day in the home of Peter Hall's grandson. The bottom (cut off) portion of the table was saved though and as you can see - we placed the two pieces back together for the photo.

I was extremely fortunate to have been given unlimited access to this piece - I took lots of photos and measurements and re-constructed the piece as it was originally built.
In an earlier project post I mentioned that the Thorsen Sideboard was my closest reproduction of an original G&G piece - I had forgotten about this one - but then this is not necessarily in the strictest sense an original G&G piece - but was produced in Peter Hall's shop and in the style of G&G - along with all the other G&G original furniture.
When finished - I gave this piece to the Hall family as a Thank You for all the help and unlimited access they had given me while writing my book.

The closeup of the joint in the third photo shows what wonderful craftsmanship went into this piece.

I've run out of superlatives to describe your work and workmanship Darrell. All I can say is, if I were younger and had your talent and know how, I would be a very happy man.

Thanks everyone!
I had a finisher do the finish for me - which is a very finely ground (very expensive too!) pigmented stain with a top coat that is a hy-bred - not quite a canalized lacquer - my finisher gets into chemistry and looses me at this point.

When doing the finish myself I have finish that I have developed - which I described on my blog

Darrell: Another great piece of furniture. It's great that you've been able to bring back a one-of-a-kind in it's oringinal design. Great job.

I saw this one in the magazine, which rarely appears here, and the photo of this one cut down for a coffee table looks awful. This is much nicer in it,s original form.

You do amazing work. Very excellent craftsmanship. I can't wait to see your next piece. Do you do just G&G design?

Hi Matt,
thanks -
For the time being I do only G&G inspired work - I don't foresee that changing but I don't like boxing myself in either - I like to think I go wherever my whim takes me - so for now that is G&G

Absolutly fantastic work and design. on the bread board end, it looks like you have 2 independent pieces of ebony. Are they dual function. How does that work? Thanks
