Project Information

I haven't posted here for quite some time. We just are finishing up with a very long move. I had no idea how much wood I had and tools and other stuff. I feel a little like a hoarder. But we are finally here in Port Orford, Oregon and loving it!! Hope to be posting more. This is the first tree carving that I have completed in my new shop.

I call this carving "Groovin' ". The carving depicts a steady old Oak Tree passing it's time in woodland peace with it's little Pine Tree buddy. Boo Bear just loves his home in the woods. I makes him smile all the time as he dances and shares his joy with any he crosses paths with. I love being in the midst of these wonderful creatures. It makes me warm inside just to hang out around them and reminds me of being present. There is a lot of detail in these carvings. The Oak Trees are my favorite kind of Trees to carve. I love the over all shape of this piece.

It measures 22" tall x 14 3/4" wide x 1 3/4" thick. It hangs on the wall. I don't do nearly as many tree carvings as I used to. I used to only carve tree scenes. A little harder on my hands now days. But if I pace myself I still get to do them.

This piece is Big Leaf Mapbe Burl. A Burl is usually caused by a trees reaction to an agro bacteria. It starts sending out a huge number of buds showing birds eye grain throughout the Burl. Sometimes it is caused by stress. It is very unusual and is very interesting to look at.

The technique I use is called Pierced Relief. It is carved out of one piece of wood and nothing is added. I have been carving since 1971 and a tree was the first carving I did. I have always been stimulated to carve a resemblance of a tree out of a tree. My technique has evolved over all of these years to what you see here. I keep seeing ways to make things more life like. And I love a piece to look like it is in the middle of a story that each observer can make up. Sometimes a different story each time we look at it and sometimes the same one. I love giving a piece the feeling of action. Sometimes tranquil and sometimes playful. I love it all.

You have moved to a wonderful area for woodworking. There some beautiful woods to choose from. I love the Myrtle wood to work with. I lived in Coquille for many years back in the 1950's. I envy your skills and patience to that kind of work.

Gary, that is amazing, it's my favourite that I've seen of yours.
Glad to see that you have settled in to your new abode.

Now you know why I'm never moving from here, except in a box.

Thanks for sharing this masterpiece with us.
