Project Information

As most projects do this one has a story. Last summer while I was at the Hardwood supplier I checked out there $1.00 a bd. ft. bin and came across a piece of maple that had had this inclusion which is the bottom part of the frame pictured. I just knew that I would be able to do something with it…. Well last Christmas my youngest daughter had a print made of a article that was printed in the Daily Olympian in Washington State on September 7 1981 (she was 7 at the time). The top two drawings in the print are ones that she had done for a school project on labor for Labor Day. I have an original of the article also and my intent was to frame it and now it is.

The frame is from a design that was in Fine Woodworking. The sizing is different to accommodate the lower piece of the frame so the inclusion would be centered. I got in a rush to get this together and failed to reduce the thickness of the side rails by 3/32 which would have provided another shadow line. The pegs are ebonized walnut with mortise and tenon construction. The relief carving on the top and bottom provide shadow lines also. I also did a double mat with red on the inner to match the printing on the top of the article and black for the outer mat to help make the print stand out from the frame. Thank you for looking…..

I really like the use of natural feature grade timber… the natural feature in the lower rail is outstanding.

This is very kool. That knot-hole really accents it nicely. Nice pegs also. I like the different sizes.

Hey Max,
That is really sharp. And what a great story, both inside and out.

I like it,

@Steve, I think the story is the best part, but then again I am kinda partial. Thank you for your compliment.

That's beautiful Max, I just read that project in FWW and thought it would be cool to make. I like the inclusion in the bottom part of the frame it adds a lot of character to this piece.

Really great job Max. I do similar work from time to time with timber that lends itself to that style. To get more adventurist you may want to try roughing up the edges of the remainder of the piece to make it blend in. Just a suggestion. To give you an idea of what I mean, I will try to post a project by next week that shows what I mean. Well done.

Terrific frame; especially nice design work. using the "inclusion" makes it distinctively yours. Most precious and of greatest value to you, I'd imagine, is the framed subject. Unbeatable project. Thanks for sharing.
