Project Information
Just some quick and easy Christmas gifts for the family. Saw variations of these on LJ's and thought I'd try it. Found the 45 degree angle many specified was a little too slanted for my taste, plus the bottle came out almost horizontal when I've been told by some of my wine loving in-laws the bottle should tip toward the cork when being stored. So, I changed the angle to 36 degrees and drilled the holes with a 1 1/4" forstner bit (may need to go to 1 3/8" in the future as some of the necks are just slightly too large) at a 90 degree angle. Overall, I'm very pleased with these. The first one is mahogany for my Mom and Pop in-law, the next two are black walnut, and the last two are Rocky Mountain Red Juniper. My kids got all excited about cranking out a bunch of these and trying to sell them (they think they'll be a really hot item - I'm not so sure, but am willing to try, I guess). All are finished with one coat of Zinsser dewaxed shellac and three coats of Minwax hand rubbed poly.
