Project Information

This is made of scrap lumber I had around. Pine and or Hem/Fir. I got a box of hardwood wheels off eBay for next to nothing.

Notice the plan has a detail showing the doors opening. I felt small hinges and short screws would not last long under the normal use applied by 6 and 8 year olds.;-) I took an old pair of Levis and salvaged the denim from a low wear spot on the end of the leg. It is glued, stapled, folded over on itself, glued and stapled again. The doors still worked when Robby took it home!

GOOD JOB GRANDPA…are you sure you are not the one who needs that after there stay…lol…im sure the next time mine come, they will be older and i might have similar demands placed on me…although i have already made him a large truck, in fact i made it out of walnut and a few other woods…i know for awhile they were sitting on it, so if it survives..ill be happy, but if they need another one, grandpa will come to the rescue….......sirens blasting, lights flashing…and the medics flying out the doors…

Grandma probably needs it! I had it pretty easy. After dinner one evening I pickuped up the dishes and started doing them. The 6 year old asked Grandma why she was making me do all the work? ;-) She had been doing all the work!!

Way to go Bob. The smile on Robby's face is indication enough that Grandpa did a great job. I like your creative thinking regarding the denim.

Bob if you keep hanging around with the kids, sooner or later they will make a real grandpa out of you. lol. Toy cars are one thing, but befroe you know it, "Hey Grandpa, I need the keys to the truck!" lol

The drawing is to scale. I made a few mistakes though. I made the snout of the truck too short and almost all of my wheels touch the ground ;-))

The kids don't help much. I keep them back form the power tools. Their hearing is good enough that it bothers their ears. I keep them out of the dust too. When they get old enough the face masks and ear muffs fit a little better they can get into it.

When I was 6 or 7, I was crawling along 1/4 mile long corn rows pulling weeds. Dad didn't trust us with hoes because we took out too much corn ;-) Hand eye coordination needed a little more time. It was OK because we weren't fast enough to stir up any dust and it was quiet out there except for birds chirping. About the 4th of July, we were done. Not hoeing the field, but because dad couldn't see where we were and the corn was starting to shade out the weeds. He started us on the worst side because he knew we would never finish. Too bad I don't have a nice quiet dust free job to share with them ;-))

Way to go Granpa! I remember the days when I was "Robby" (really, my name is Rob) and my Grandfather made sooden toys for me. I actually still have a bi-plane he made for me sitting in my office.

Yeah, I was fun. No pressure for the perfect fit and finish. I expect it to get banged up, drawn on and well used. I just try to make sure there aren't any areas of grain that will easily come lose and become a splinter.

You'll need to get a coat of paint on that ambulance, or it'll rust -:)
