Showcase cover image for Grady's Toy box/Treasure Chest

Project Information

Built for friends who had their first child a year ago…(I'm behind in my project list!!!) I'd built one for my niece some years ago out of reclaimed Doug-fir ( http://lumberjocks.com/projects/840 )and she seems to like it. The wood on this one is Big Leaf Maple that came from the tree farm in Oregon we both work at. I had it milled a couple years ago and air dried. These were some of the wider (18") boards that I got out of the tree - lotsa figure! The plan for the box is from Woodsmith - Finished with 3 coats sealer, 2 coats poly and wax. Hopefully it will make a good treasure chest for the kid!

Nice. The two levels of trays is a nice touch.

Nice work, Schroeder! That should last, at least, a couple of generations.

Schroeder,

This is a gorgeous box. You really brought out the figure on the maple.

Thanks for the post.

That is some spectacular looking wood Schroeder. Nice design on the box too. The child should be very happy with it.

Nice box, Schroeder. Big Leaf Maple is one of my favorite woods, and it seems to make it's way to my Omaha woodseller about ever two years. I just laid in a smallish batch - I can hear it calling to me all the way out in the garage…

That's some pretty wood. At first glance I thought it was veneer, just based on the figure in it.

Very nice work on the box, as well.
