Project Information

These are the drivers I made for LJ ToddJB in the swap we just wrapped up. The shanks were purchased bare from Grace Tools USA. They are excellent drivers of high-quality steel and precision ground tips. I am really impressed with the company and their product. I'll definitely be sending future business their way!

I turned Walnut handles for the straight drivers and Cherry for the phillips heads. The handles were turned on 3 different axis to get a grip that's continuous and smooth but not round. That way you can get a better grip for torque and they won't roll off the workbench. The second pic shows the different profiles from the 2 sides.

The overall handle design started out based on some tools in a photo of H.O. Studley's tool chest (thanks for the inspiration BigRedKnothead!) but ended up pretty heavily modified until I found a geometry that felt "just right" to my hand.

The final picture is a knockout bar I made as a bonus item for Todd after he remarked on how much he liked Rick M's in the Swap thread. Thanks for the inspiration on that one Rick!

This swap was a TON of fun and I learned a lot. I also got a killer set of drivers from LJ Combo Prof to add to my tool box. If you've never done one, jump on in to the next one. It's a great time and a great learning experience with a great bunch of talented woodworkers!

I'm stoked your abstract teaser turned out to be a winner!

You had a great idea with that knock bar as a bonus gift Ken, 2 cool.

I am super blessed to be the recipient of these. Fit and finish are top notch. The shape is great in hand, and I've been using the heck out of them already on the planer I'm working on. And the knock out bar works like a dream.

Thanks again, Kenny!
