Showcase cover image for "Gothic Cat Carving"

Project Information

When I first started carving ten years ago. I spent most of my time sharping my carving gouges. On this "Gothic cat" I diden't use any sand paper. I was really trying to make it look like old world style of craftsmanship. By showing the carving marks that gouges leave.
This "Gothic cat face was my 3rd carving that I made for myself, two years later I made a second one for a customer. I don't really like the gothic style. Butt, this cat face was a fun wall plaque to make. It's caved out of bass wood. The eyes are out of Ebony & Canary yellow wood. The size is 9"wide x 12" long x 4" deep. "Thanks for looking"

Very nice Dennis, I am impressed with how smooth it came out without using sandpaper. Those tools were sharp to do that kind of work.

Thank you for sharing this Dennis.

I prefer seeing a carving showing the classical tool marks.

You can't get that look by using machines.

Awesome Dennis, I prefer carvings that show the tooling marks, as do most of our customers. They want people to know that it was hand carved.

Your a great carver!

Dennis, this is another outstanding piece! I agree with the other comments here, leaving your gouge markings are great, but I also love the lion carvings you posted some time back where you sanded them too.
Your work is incredible and you have amazingly developed talent. You keep the bar raised pretty high for yourself by posting all these great pieces.

Thanks for posting this.

Again fantastic work. It almost has an Incan or Mayan flavor to it.

Your a very talented man. I am about to try my hand at carving. I am curious what brand of carving chisels you use?
