Showcase cover image for getting ready for spring, Christmas presents

Project Information

Hello everyone and Happy New Year. I made these as Xmas presents for my cousin and brother who are my hunting partners. The plans are from "http://customsawing.com". The build up was fairly straight forward. The first is tiger maple and mahogany. The second is mostly mahogany, with the end blocks being scrap pieces of white oak. I scroll sawed the turkey tracks from walnut. The hardware came from the Depot. Nothing special brass wood screws and little springs. I finished both with several coats of arm r seal. Minus the bottom of the lid. I wasn't sure how it would affect sound quality. As for sound quality. I am very pleasantly surprised. I fully went into it thinking it would be a decorative piece. They sound so good that I am expecting them to go afield. The all mahogany box measures 6" the maple box is 7" the mahogany one sounds a touch better. One thing I was surprised with is the difference in sound quality that the side grooves made. I am planning 2 more one for myself. Thank you and once again happy new year.

wow in the process of describing what wood and techniques I used, It completely escaped me that lots of folks don't hunt and thus don't know what it is. Well for the record it is a turkey box call used to imitate all types of turkey calls.

Great job on the calls. Beautifull figure in that maple. Will make for great gifts.

Keep it up.

Great Job!!! Turkey season will be here before you will know it. I started a couple of call last year but had to stop for another project and have not gotten back to them yet. There are a couple of great call makers in this area, one of them has made calls for the Realtree team. I would love to hear how your call sound, Great I'm sure.
I was out behind my house yesterday afternoon and saw 12 hens in a field, enough to start getting me primed up.
Good hunting and again a great job on the calls.

Looks good, and I am sure they sound good too. I have already got requests for some this spring. I only make a few each year and give them all away. Made some for NWTF auctions too.

Boy - the things I learn on this website. I had never heard of a turkey call before. A lot of wild turkeys like to hang out in my backyard. I'll have to make one of these and see how they react to it.

Oh, b.t.w. this looks like great work.

Ok. So how do you make it call a turkey? Wouldn't a cell phone work as well? Seriously, how does it work?
