Project Information

I wanted to improve my skills in Rhino, so I modeled this based on a picture I seen in a woodworking book. It proved to be quite challenging. It also had me get out the rotary attachment for my CNC that I haven't used for a while.

The whole purpose was an exercise in modeling. I figured that not only could I get the pitch correct, but I also had the correct number of teeth, spacing, and angle so the flat gear would mesh with the worm gear. It took me a while to get my brain wrapped around what I was doing, but finally it clicked. I had no idea how everything would go until I got the modeling done. To my surprise, the gears actually mesh well and it turns quite easily.

Neat project, and the best way to learn is to build. Now you ready to build some clocks.

Being a fan of, what else but, useful-less dust collectors

I appreciate your gear.

OK. Mine is a tad down market, but it was done many years ago, before electric cars.

That's the kind of thing that might alter my views about cnc woodworking. Great job!

That is one nice piece of craftsmanship. Fun to look at too.

The only thing I would change is the base. I deserves something nicer like a solid piece of hardwood.

Maybe the same wood the worm gear is made from or the bracket wood with some detail on it.

I'm a big fan of cutting wood gears too. I've often thought of making a jig to "turn" worm gears. How did you make it?

It's in my basement 'wrecked' room on the door to the furnace / storage room. One of those "I'm really getting bored during the Covid mess. What can I make" projects.
