Project Information

I made this walnut bench for my auto mechanic, Jack. He's a really special guy .. a true American hero.

He grew up on the streets of Vancouver, British Columbia playing hockey and fighting and, often times, both. I believe he'd rather have fought than scored a goal. He spent four years in the Royal Canadian Air Force, following the lead of his father.

After the four years in the Canadian military he joined the US Army so he could go to Viet Nam. He flew Hueys. He was shot down twice. The second time the bullet went up through the sole of his foot and up through his calf, taking out half the muscle.

He told me his proudest moment was when he reached Full Bird Colonel and his retired father saluted him as a subordinate officer, as his father only made it to Lieutenant Colonel.

Jack's a good friend and a hell of an auto mechanic.

Thank you so much, everyone.

Tom, the ends are three 3/4" pieces stacked and staggered for strength .. total of 2-1/4".

Bennett, yes, I appreciate Jack's service and he and his wife, Sue, really like the bench. I originally meant it as a garden bench, because their yard is so beautiful. I put no finish on it so it would gray naturally. ..But Sue thought it looked like a train station bench and wanted it indoors, so I finished it and they put it in their foyer. They found a great spot for it on the stone floor with plants on either side.
