Project Information

My buddy Kenny left me some railroad dunnage after I helped him with his retirement box project so I just had to cut into it and see what I found! I also had been wanting to try Von Hagan's raised panels on the tablesaw so this box happened. Dimensions:14×8 x 3 5/8". Walnut splines. Ipe' handle. Shipwright style wooden hinge. Finished with rubbed on shellac. The sides are glued up bookmatched quarter sawn dunnage with the grain wrapped around all 4 corners (a first for me). I tried to grain match the hinge as well. Another fun build until I got to the hinge (six hours later it decided to be a good hinge!)

Not only do I love the box, the photography is excellent on it. I am not very good at those hinges yet.

gfadvm, very cool box, but I'm at a loss as to what railroad dunnage is. Are they just railroad ties?

Andy, this is masterful. I especially like the proportions and the legs in this design. I too saw the video on the raised panel. It does seem to work well in this design.

As always, you get the most beauty out of the wood you have. I like the four corner match idea on this box. It only works if you start in the middle of the book-match when you lay out the sides. Thanks for the inside look…though I was expecting dividers.

This is a really beautiful box…a work of art. It is one of your best ever. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Nice work, Andy. I have to agree you do get a lot out of the wood you use. I will have to try this bookmatch design with some scrap redwood burl with sapwood and heart wood. thanks for posting.

Love the new design and the wrap around grain…......sweet! Good to hear that you conquered the hinge! That grain pattern on the front is pretty wild…....good one Andy….

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Dunnage is NOT railroad ties! They are nasty. Maybe Kenny will weigh in with the specific usage of dunnage. I think it is used to brace loads but not certain.

Thanks Monte. I have an OLD, CHEAP Canon camera. I just throw a black sheet over one of my tall chairs to shade/surround the piece to be photographed.

Beautiful Andy.
I would loved to have seen that wood before you started.
I'll bet it was a not particular pretty piece of wood.
Something I have been stuck on lately is how the ugliest rough stock often turns out to make the most beautiful projects.
The quality and beauty of your work never ceases to amaze me Andy.

Beautiful Andy, Typically dunnage is inexpensive or waste material used to protect and secure cargo during transportation. So basically, it's just scrap that the railroad uses to tie the loads down…..

Very beautiful piece. Everything from the bookmatch to the hinges , and panel are just top notch. I 'm impressed with the raised panel on TS. How hard was the setup?I watched the video you sent but it's been awhile now.
