Project Information

We had a clear-out and up popped this. It dates from the mid-1980's, when I didn't have a proper workshop and did all my woodwork on a Black and Decker Workmate (knockdown bench) in the back yard, on the few good days we have in England. I believe I used a Bosch 1/4" Router and the timber was hand sawn and planed.

Yes, its a playing card case, in Ebony and Bird's Eye Maple.

Size 106mm x 76mm x 26mm.

Glue is PVA (I've always used it).

Finish is wax over sanding sealer (and that too).

I'd thought it was lost forever.

That is an exact fit. If you count from 1980 to impossible series… your accuracy has developed for years. I think, I gonna have a lot of practice to make mine a perfect job!. Seriously, it will be a lasting gift … the skill you have. Cheers.

Thank you all for the positive feedback. I have kept my old Workmate, you never know when it might come in handy. It often does even if its as another clamp. Fortunes can also change. I have a shop now but might not always.

Isn't that nice to run into those things from way back. The only thing is, for me to look for something like that would be a complete waist of time…..I never made anything like that.
Thanks for the wonderful post, Pabull.

You've convinced me that it's not the new and fancy tools and gadgets i've been wanting so I can make beautiful things like you do. It's whats between the ears that counts. But I still want those fancy tools and gadgets!

Littlepaw, we all like toys. I just don't like having to pay for them myself. In my experience if people want something they'l get it though. It may be the answer to all your problems it may not be. I've found the secret is not to get what you want but to get what you need.

What is between the ears is often helpful. With that you can often turn a want (that you can't afford) into something you can do or make yourself (which you can afford). Thats how I do it. I wanted an Incra fence for my table saw, I couldn't afford it, I designed my way around it and made something almost as accurate (certainly accurate enough for what I want to do) for a few pennies. Thats why I enjoy making jigs for projects. I get the tool I need and a great feeling of satisfaction out of having made it myself. All it costs is time and I have as much of that as the next person. Most of the time you don't even have to do the hard work for yourself. If you look hard enough here and around the woodwork world someone has probably solved your particular problem and published it already.
