Project Information

We had a clear-out and up popped this. It dates from the mid-1980's, when I didn't have a proper workshop and did all my woodwork on a Black and Decker Workmate (knockdown bench) in the back yard, on the few good days we have in England. I believe I used a Bosch 1/4" Router and the timber was hand sawn and planed.

Yes, its a playing card case, in Ebony and Bird's Eye Maple.

Size 106mm x 76mm x 26mm.

Glue is PVA (I've always used it).

Finish is wax over sanding sealer (and that too).

I'd thought it was lost forever.

this just shows that it's the abilities of the woodworker and not all the fancy tools. Deal me in???

Nice one Martyn.
Maybe it's blast from the past week. I just posted a project that dates back to the same time frame.
It's fun to look back and recall the "good old days"
Very fine workmanship and a royal treatment for those lucky cards.

Now let's see…... I used to have a Black & Decker workmate in the 80's….. but nothing like this ever
came out of it…. Another fantastic little box Martyn and to echo michelletwo, this truly shows that it is
the skill of the woodworker that counts.

Thanks for sharing a bit of the past…

Hand tools! Yikes!
That is a very handsome box. I really like it.
My workmate is now the stand for my planer. Looks like you did yours proud.

I still have mine, Larry. Its behind the planer (not under it like Steve's) and still gets the occasional outing!

It is fun to find some of the projects we made in the past and perhaps forgot about. This is a really beauty, Martyn! The bird's eye looks great with the ebony. Beautiful combination and finish. I am glad you found it and shared it with us.

Very nicely done, especially given the tools you had available to make it.

A great looking box. A great idea also. Both of my kids have favourite decks that I should make boxes for. Thank you for the inspiration!
