Project Information

I received a call from my son-in-laws father. He has a neighbor who is trying to give away an 1820's barn. You must disassemble and take away. The barn is made with tongue and groove beams with pegs holding it together. There is also some hand hewn beams beside the barn.

The barn is in Branchberg NJ. South of Sommerville and North of Flemington. NJ.

Here is the message that I received.

Subject: Circa 1820 Barn & Hand Hewn Timber
Attached are photos of our circa 1820 barn with loft (35'x15') and hand hewn beams which are both being giving away free if you dismantle and cart away.
We are NJ Builders starting a new subdivision and the barn must be taken down.

Thank you for your consideration.

I'm 10 minutes away - I don't have the space to store all that wood - but I WOULD LOVE TO HELP so I can get my hands on some pieces

I'll send an e-mail - what do I have to lose?

What a lot of wood! It looks to be in good shape, too bad it has to come down, it'd make a great attraction for the new community. The developer may be missing out on an opportunity:)

Karson,

You're going to have to build a bigger workshop!

If it is like the barns of that era, around here, it probably has a lot of Chestnut beams!

That looks good enough to disassemble and re-erect somewhere else!

Too big a job for this old nail puller. But I bet it would be fun to watch the process.

That would be a great building for an agricultural educational farm. I hope someone takes up this offer and gives this building a new life!

Wow, this looks like a big project and a big budget too. Maybe a NewYankee WorkShop Episode in the making here. They seem to thrive on old barn wood recovery and repurpose. A great PR possibility for the developer. Hey come and watch as the NYW and TOH come and dismantle a historic building, you the idea.

Don't get me wrong though, I would sure love some wood too.

This was very nice of you to shar this info, Karson. De-structing is worse than constructing, in my humble opinion. I know someone will definitely jump on this tho. Good luck to the receiver and his/her crew to disassemble this piece o history.

It is probably a bit much for any one person or even a person with a couple of friends. But if there were a local woodworkers guild or wood turners club they could probably put together a crew that would get good use from a lot of it. Try someone at this woodworkers guild website http://www.njwoodguild.com/guild/Home.html or this wood turners website http://www.njwoodturners.com/ (If they wanted to send me some as a commission for pointing you in their direction feel free to tell them I would humbly accept it.)

How fun that would be. We missed out on Blondies farm she grew up on in Upstate New York getting some boards. Her brothers never though the wood had any value. You should get some great stuff from this…..

Guys

I just stopped by the barn to check it out - THOSE BEAMS ARE MASSIVE

most of them 16×16 to 20×18 at about 12'

I was thinking I would take a bunch - but I think I'm in over my head

Anybody wanting to try it - you may need a Bobcat or Lull and a flatbed trailer

Here's some pics

Looks like, to me, that there just might be enough interest, to form a Group Partnership where the Group can handle it…

Develop a list of interested people and a brief resume of experiences, management abilities, general worker, silent partner, have truck will travel, etc.

Someone, The Starter, take the initiative to tackle & coordinate it, develop a list of positions needed to do the job, analyze the list to determine if the group can do it… Look for people for needed tasks, etc.
If so, do it; else, nice try…

Someone would have to be able to have the ability to study the site & prepare the demolition Plan / procedure showing the tasks by category of how the job should be done.

Note: one of the people would be Sales Oriented to market & setup the Sales mini-group… Sounds like you could sell quite a bit to easily pay all of the expenses as well as provide good wood to The Partnership & Public making a nice profit which all of the Partners would benefit.

There would be a risk, as there is in everything… No Risk, No Gain…

The Contractor(s) needing it to be gone, probably will want it cleared ASAP…

An interesting project… opportunity…
