Project Information

Wood And Materials Used
Cherry & birch
This frame will be a gift to my sister in-law's mom following the passing of her husband (my SIL's dad).

I wanted to make a unique frame and this resulted in some stumbles in the build. I thought the two wood types would be interesting so did a glue up.

I planned for an inner strip of cherry but didn't have the birch cut correctly so the miters would have been off. Trimmed the width to correct for that. Was cutting chamfers on the edges of the final pieces when I got a major chip out. Back to trimming and readjusting to remove that. I wanted a stand but didn't get the weight/angle on the support piece so then had to cut that off at the table saw.

Selected a new piece of cherry for the support and just caught myself from gluing it to the front rather than the back of the frame!

In the end, it looks nice and I'll let the finish set before mailing. Pups approved

Very nice frame you have created. The combination of woods good well together. I have to say you have those frames down pat, well done.

It is a good looking frame. We all strive to get as close to perfection as we can. The frame honors his remembrance, that makes it perfect.

Thanks pottz! I hope she has a special picture to display.

Eric - thanks! I was getting frustrated with all the "oops" but kept "redesigning" - like the look and may try another with layers.

Jkm312 - thank you! I like to make things - my way of working through things. I am in the midst of more frames as my father-in-law passed away in September. I love pictures and so frames are a woodworking extension of that.

BB1,

Nicely done. Like the laminated wood colors, adds a little pizazz.

The journey may have been unplanned but the destination was spot on!
Frames can be a lot of fun.

Dave - thanks! I think I'll try some more this way as it allows me to use some otherwise too narrow pieces.

Steve - thanks! I could have done with a bit shorter journey, but all's well in the end. Even with the fussiness of getting the miters, I do like to make frames.

Thanks. It arrived there early this morning and her daughter let me know she was surprised and appreciative of the little gift.
