Something Different!
"Forces of Nature", created from Old Growth Redwood root…On a sculpted Redwood base
Approx 8.5 feet tall, 3.5 feet across
I came across this wood 5 or 6 years ago, and just had to have it…I intended to carve it, but had no firm plans. As I started cleaning up the log, removing the dirt and rocks…it became more refined, I found voids and holes we never knew exsisted…and it became more and more interesting.
The more I studied the wood, the more I realized I couldn't really improve on the natural design that God had already put in it…It is amazing, it spirals around itself 6 or 7 times, shaped by the earth, sky, water, weather and time. It has been exposed to the weather for decades, maybe centuries, creating a unique checkered pattern on the surface.
Indeed, shaped by the forces of nature…
So, again with something rare and special in my hands I chose to just refine it…and I have never spent so much time on a project to make it look like I did nothing at all! Nearly half the mass was removed to bring it down to solid wood while retaining the natural character and weathering. The wood itself is very tight dense grain, since it is root wood. Interestingly, when I cut the end for it to stand, I counted the rings at about 100 years per inch!
The engineering is half the fun…At around 800 pounds, this piece stands on a turning pin, so it can be easily turned with one hand to view from all angles…
This piece is available for sale…email for info.
