Project Information

Here is the drill press cabinet that I made from plans out of American Woodworker magazine #78 from February 2000. It goes around my Grandfathers 1933 Delta DP220 drill press. (it got a bit of rust on it when I moved last year…gotta take care of that!) The plans required modification to fit my press, but the main idea came right out of the magazine.

Photo details:
1 Overall assembly as it sits in the shop. (nevermind the fuel splatter on the paint job…stupid mower!)
2 Note the drawers are not full depth due to the support post of the drill…but still plenty of room in there!
3 Here's the back of the cabinet. The secret is the full depth drawer slides.

Project details:
  • Top is 24.5" wide x 23" deep x 1.5" thick (2 pieces of 3/4" plywood)
  • Main cabinet is 3/4" MDF
  • Cabinet is 38" tall x 20.5" wide x 20" deep
  • drawer slides are 20" long
  • Drawers (minus fronts) are: 17.875" wide x 11.5" deep x 5" high
  • Drawer fronts are 20.5" wide and height as required

If you are lucky enough to have a floor drill press, why not reclaim the space underneath it and build one too!

That is a cool idea. I especially like the way that you used those long drawer slides and it has the effect of being able to pul the drawers out further. Very cool.

Did you put it on wheels so you could pull it away from the drill press if necessary ??? I am in the process of trying to design one of these for my garage - thanks for displaying your project if is very similar to what I have been thinking of building !!!!!! Nice Job !!!!

Thanks, guys. I'm happy to share my stuff.

@1yeldud1: I didn't put any wheels on it. The original intent was for it to rest on the floor and you just drag it out of the way on those rare occasions where you need to lower the table that much. I did, however, nail some of those furniture glide thingees underneath. Works great!
