Project Information

This is a platform bed designed by the customer. It had a total of 12 drawers which are similar to my captain's drawer pedestal. From there an inset pedestal with a platform was added, giving it a floating feeling. This was completed in October 2012

The wood was oak with a black lacquer finish. Great texture of the wood using the oak over a painted service.

The headboard is just a simple 1 1/2" thick flat panel. The customer may plan on upholstering it in the future.

Hmmmm, I built a base very similar for a waterbed we had 30 years ago. Mine had 4 drawers on each side and I remember I used 3/4" plywood on it. That sucker was heavy as all getout!

Nice job on this one. I like the floating illusion part!

Chris, very nice I like it a lot

Having three Boxers that love our bed. MMMh!
How high is the Mattress?
Do you think Boxers could figure out that the drawers could become
an impromptu Stair case? Could locks be fitted.

Thanks for Sharing, a "Boxer Owners Dream".

Yes locks could be put on there. I just put some on a bed the other day. I keyed one side with one key and the other side with another.

On the mattress, with the 10" mattress shown it was 42" high overall.

A unique design,I just wonder if it's a bit to high off the floor.

How much weight can you put on that platform? I'd be worried about someone sitting on the edge of the bed and suddenly CRACK no more bed…but I don't know the materials science to judge that.

It shouldn't be an issue. It is only 12" from the edge. We use to inset waterbed pedestals almost that much using 7/16" OSB. This is 3/4" MDF. Another factor would be the mattress acting as a buffer to more evenly distribute the weight.

did you do any under-strenghtening? Or how was it different for this bed…I assume the dresser can hold two adults?

Looks cool! I am sure the customer is happy!

No more then normal besides adding a top to drawers. Like in my previous comment, the design came from when we built Waterbeds and can hold a lot of weight.

ok…cool…just was thinking there would need additional strengthening--but waterbeds are heavy so that makes sense…

Happy New Year…
