Project Information

It was too hot in the barn for working so I rolled out my new lathe stand turned 5 pens out on the east side of the barn later when the sun went way west!.
Two are African Blackwood, two are Mesquite and one is Olive wood. They are finished with EEE and Shellawax.

The new Delrin bushings I made worked real good in that they never turned the wood black like the brass ones did when I hit them with EEE . However, the ends crush a bit from the pressure needed to turn the blanks so I need to make a good supply of them.

I found some real nice pen gift boxes from a place called Amsterdam so I bought a bunch and they will be given with each pens sold.

cheers, Jim

Nice pens Jim. Those blackwoods look wicked. I"m surprised you haven't made a assembly line for the pen display boxes yet. I bet it was hot in the barn. You need one of those portable air conditioners.

Thanks, Dave,Tony . Pottz and Andre.

Hi Dave. I have a fan in there but when the dust is flying.,it goes even further with the fan on. I do have a pen display rack on the other lathe so I will have to do some turning in the heat.

Hi Andre..i have Koa blanks and maple burl blanks. they'll come out soon. I have to see how well pens sell at my next sale on July 20th. At the shows a lot of people always asked if I had pens and then I didn't but now I do!

Cheers, Jim

Another nice lot of pens Jim, I like the woods. Gift boxes are a nice touch to a sale if the buyer thinks you are adding it as a freebie. I also have velvet sleeves as a give away gimmick at the market, always puts a smile on the customers face, then if that fails add a spare refill. Costs are covered by my initial sale price so if they don't want any of the above a small discount is OK. Have fun Jim but don't get addicted. Cheers.

J'J', nothing against the pens, but what is your market? I have a couple of hundred pens that I've distributed to my kin and even running out of enemies to give to.

Jim, a couple of suggestions for keeping the black off of the blank you're polishing with EEE.

1. I made a couple of spacers that i use for various reasons that are made of scrap wood on some spare 7mm (slimline) tubes.

2. For blanks that are larger than slimlines you can put painters tape or packing tape on the bushings along with the spacers. Wrap the tape in the direction of rotation.

They come in handy for various reasons and usually just stay on the mandrel as they are also great for centering and tool rest alignment.

Thanks, Andy . I think they will both work but I have a lot of Delrin and I'll just make another dozen bushings. that makes it quick and it works very well, too. I have then in 2 diameters so far.

cheers, Jim

Nice. could not figure out that thing sticking out the back of the lathe, looked like it came out of the tailstock. after I zoomed it I can see what it is. extension of the motor for polishing. Either that lathe is extremely small or that motor is very big.
