Project Information

Please excuse the dust inside the box! So this is my first take at a tea box, I made it for my husband. The box is maple, lid and legs are canary wood and the splines, bottom and handle are jatoba. The dividers are maple and cherry and I mortised the maple pieces into the box for stability. I have done this type of leg in the past but hadn't done a lid in this manner so I wanted to see if I could pre-finish all the interior pieces, glue it all together and use a flush trim bit to flush up the exterior of the lid. Also wanted some more practice at hand mortising hinges (these are the cheaper Rockler stop-hinges which I think are really good for the price) I drilled for the hinges just a tad off this time. I used a wipe-on poly but if I ever do this type of leg again, I will definitely either just oil or spray. Overall, I'm fairly happy with it and my husband loves it so all is good :)

Thanks for looking!

BANG. Nice box. I really like the feet, the legs, and even the wide hips. The lift is fine too. I like the matching woods and they are playing so well with the contrasting wood. Just really nice work.

Thanks for sharing Kim, and Congrats on your 3.

Steve, too funny - now that you say 'hips', I wasn't thinking of Kim Kardashian (or however you spell that)! Maybe If I make those again I'll go for a more athletic look…lol :)

Hi Kim

I think KK has hips that are way too disproportionate to her. on that box it's perfect. I think in wood a lot of people would have flipped those legs, and gone stockier at the bottom, and the way you did it looks like they are embracing the box. To my eye that is much better. I don't think I would have seen that before. You would be great to teach design.

Thanks Rj, and the legs are 2 pieces mitered together glued on to the box after the box is assembled. I put a quarter inch piece of ply under the box while I glue them on so all the legs sit level and used epoxy to adhere them.

I was just going to comment on how much I liked your box, and then I noticed we live in the same town. I have never seen someone from Lone Jack on here before. Nice design on your box. I have been making a few boxes lately myself and yours caught my eye as I was looking through the projects. Keep up the good work!

Hi Eric, Nice to make your acquaintance! I see you are a firefighter so thank you for protecting all in Lone Jack :) Thank you for the compliment on the box and I will look forward to seeing what you have made. All your work is great, I looked back through your projects and will look forward to seeing more!
