Project Information

I turned this today on my Shopsmith Mark V. The only other thing I had turned previously was some 3/4" dowels for bench dogs. My wife and I chopped down a small oak tree on my son's and daughter-in-law's property yesterday, and I decided to make my DIL a rolling pin from their tree. It's 18" long overall with 12" of straight rolling space. The diameter is 2-1/2". Next time I'll use calipers to make both handles the same. I am not too happy with the handles, but I'm sure I'll get better with practice. Maybe the one I'll make for my wife will turn out better.

Good on you Don. Turning is a great way to learn to identify timbers. Different smells, texture etc. Look forward to progress projects.

Nice, comfortable looking design. Only thing that concerns me is the way you worded your post it sounds like that is from the tree you cut down yesterday? If so there is a good chance it will start checking as at dries. You may want to stick it in a brown paper bag for a while to dry slower.

@andyboy-Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I have a long way to go on my technique!

@derosa-You understood correctly. The wood is VERY green, and I expect that it will crack and check. Thanks for the tip about putting it in a brown paper bag to slow the drying process. Would you suggest leaving it bare/naked/unfinished until it dries? It is currently bare-I still need to do a little more sanding on the handles.

Not certain, hopefully this will bump it up and someone more knowledgeable can answer. Sealing the ends is usually done. I could see a salad bowl or cutting board finish perhaps helping as they will also slow the drying process and even fill some of the space the moisture will leave but no idea if the effects will be positive or negligible.
