Project Information

Now that I have my lathe. This is the first turning project I've completed. I'm also working on an Australian Myrtle Burl flower vase that's about 3.5" tall but that's for another day.

The shaft is maple and the base is cherry. I sanded it from 120 grit up to 600 then burnished it with wood shavings before applying a mixture of shellac and wax (7 coats) then polished it to a high gloss and burnished it again with shavings to get a satin finish. The pieces are attached with a simple mortise and tenon with no glue and set to expand and contract along the grain in parallel.

Makes me happy. :)

Very nice. I have tried several different finishes (Lacquer, shellack, brush spray and wipe-on poly) on my bowls. I think I like Wipe-on poly the best. I also like salad bowl finish. I think I read somewhear that if you go below 220 grit, you are burninshing the wood, which is fine by me because I like the results. When I've tried burnishing with shavings, I find it scratches. Someone somewhere suggested using denim from a pair of old jeans…

Welcome to the club. My name is Andrew, and I'm a turnaholic…

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

Yes, I'm TOTALLY HOOKED! haha I've since turned a small bowl (which is soaking in alcohol tonight since the wood was very green; I found it along a road in Maryland, cut it up into blanks, and used it)

I also returned the little Rikon lathe I had to Woodcraft today (since they're having their 10% off power tools sale today and tomorrow) and bought the Delta 46-460 Variable Speed lathe with reverse and tuned a little decorative spindle with the time I had today.

I can see why it's so addictive now. :)

Just a note…but the myrtle burl I referred to has ended up being an incense holder and about 1/2 an inch shorter because I had problems parting it from the base.
