Project Information

This is my first bowl. It is made from mulberry. It's small and was a great learning lesson. The mulberry was a challenge as it was on it's way out, some spalted and some going soft. I may put a finish on it before I call it completely done. The pen, leaning against it, is made of cherry.

Attached is also pictures of the pen, my second, along with pens from three of my four kids. The first, starting on the left, is mine, again, made in cherry. Then is my daughter's pen, also made with cherry, then my 15 YO boy, once again in cherry, and finally, my 11 YO boy, made in beech. They all really enjoyed making their pens and I think it was really encouraging for each of them to know they could do it. My oldest is next in line to make a pen.

Hi Sherry and welcome! I've learned more on this site than anywhere else and had some laughs along the way.

Nice way to get started. I like the two end pens the best.

You're doing good.
If that's your first bowl and it did not go flying, you've done much better than me when I first tried a bowl.
My wife still has the first bowl I turned. It was almost completely finished when it went airborne. It didn't hurt my head when it hit it, but it put a crack in the bowl.

Welcome to Lumberjocks.
Be careful though. There are some weird ones here.
There's this one guy named Chris…........

Hey now, careful, I might have to take a trip down there and talk to you in person about comments like that. Then you might get stuck with a Yankee living in your shop.

Ya'll are welcome anytime to visit.
As for staying permenantly though?
We have a name for Yankees that come and stay.

But I have an extra lathe.
Maybe I can teach you to turn bowls as nice as your wife does.

Ah, but I won't try to change the politics or rock the boat. You would think I had been there all along. Maybe that's why I can't stand it up here.

It sure would be nice to get down your way one day. You never know, could happen eventually.

My door's always open.
We have a pull out bed in the couch and plenty of blankets for the kids to make pallets.
Bring pillows.
We never seem to have enough pillows.

Thank you for giving me such a warm welcome! I'm grateful for your encouragement. I'm really enjoying the process of learning how to turn. Especially when I'm not the target of my airborne projects. William, this is my first bowl, and it did go flying, not once, but multiple times. Thankfully I wasn't the target, my husband was, each and every time! I think his military service has prepared him well to be ready, at a moments notice, for unidentified flying objects. :) ~Sherry

The pen and bowl are great! Especially like the character crack in the bowl. Congratulations on getting the kids involved as well. Love it when my son will leave his computer and join us in the shop(yes, he brings it with him when he visits)! Looking forward to more turnings!
